50 West is located just east of Mariemont on US 50 west (aha!) in a stately old house with an old VW bus parked near the entrance. You’ll only find their beers on tap, whether at the brewery or Cincinnati area pub or growler station. But it’s worth the effort, and if you’re not from the ‘Nati area but your travel plans bring you here, I definitely recommend checking them out!
(I happened to find the porter on tap at Jungle Jim’s and grabbed a howler fill while the getting was good.)
Appearance (4/5): Impenetrable black with tan head; this recedes into a collar after several minutes.
Aroma (9/10): Luscious roasty notes – predominantly dark roast coffee and deep, rich cocoa/cacao nib aromas.
Palate (5/5): Moderately-full body, extremely smooth texture and somewhat viscous mouthfeel. Luxurious.
Taste (9/10): Flavors follow through on the promise of the aromas – roasty with espresso and dark cacao notes. There’s a sweetness, but it’s balanced by a molasses-like tanginess from the malt and a gentle hop bitterness. Hints of light smokiness flit through the middle. Very flavorful brew! Finishes with a distinctly bittersweet chocolate character.
Overall (18/20): This tastes like what I expect a porter to taste like. One of my favorite examples of the style.
